Surgery is done under general anesthesia, which means your child is given a combination of medications to put him or her to sleep. Surgery can range from fairly simple to very complex depending on the degree of fusion between the digits. TreatmentĪll except the mildest forms of webbed fingers and some webbed toes are treated surgically. If the doctor thinks your child might have a more complex condition, your child may have other tests. These children will have other signs and symptoms. Symptomsĭigits that are fused or joined may look webbed, and they may not move well.įor some children, having webbed fingers and / or toes is only one symptom of a more complex genetic condition or syndrome. Both syndromes are genetic disorders that can cause abnormal growth of the bones in the hands and feet. Webbing can also be related to genetic defects, such as Crouzon syndrome and Apert syndrome. Less commonly, webbing of the fingers and toes is inherited. In most cases, webbing of the fingers or toes occurs at random, for no known reason. In the case of webbed fingers or toes, this process is not completed successfully, leading to digits (fingers or toes) that are fused together or webbed. Then, around the sixth or seventh week of pregnancy, the hands and feet begin to split and form fingers and toes. When a baby develops in the womb, at first the hands and feet form in the shape of a paddle. Most commonly involve the middle and ring fingers. Can sometimes be seen prior to birth by ultrasound. Can occur alone or as part of a genetic syndrome, such as Down syndrome.Affect both hands about 50 percent of the time.Occur in about one out of every 2,500-3,000 newborns. Are fairly common and often run in families. If your child has it, it was present at birth. The washing of the disciples' feet by Jesus therefore typifies a cleansing process, or a denial of personality and materiality. The medical term for two or more fingers or toes that are fused together or “webbed” is syndactyly (sin- dak-t uh-lee). Jesus signifies the I AM, and the feet represent that phase of the understanding which connects one with the outer, or manifest, world and reveals the right relationship toward worldly conditions in general. ![]() Jesus was putting an end to this strife by bringing home to His followers the truth that he who willingly performs lowly, humble service for others, with no thought for personal distinction, is greatest in God's kingdom. There had been contention among the disciples as to who should sit at the Master's right, and who at His left, in the kingdom. To wash the feet seems a menial thing, but in this humble way Jesus taught and exemplified the willingness of divine love to serve, that man may be redeemed from the pride of the flesh. Even Peter, spiritual faith, must be cleansed from belief in the reality of material conditions. ![]() The denial of materiality is illustrated in the washing of the disciples' feet by Jesus ( John 13:5-10). The more we believe in matter, the greater the burden laid upon the feet and the more tired they become. They go all day at the bidding of the mind, and upon them rests the burden of the thought of materiality. The feet are the most willing and patient servants of the body. This is the meaning of Joshua 1:3: "Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, to you have I given it, as I spake unto Moses." Consequently we can take possession of all substance that we comprehend and understand, in the name of I AM. That phase of our understanding which comes into contact with substance.
